Acne
Acne is rated under Diagnostic Code 7828. The VA distinguishes between superficial acne (comedones, papules, pustules) and deep acne (deep inflamed nodules and pus-filled cysts). Superficial acne of any extent receives 0%. Deep acne is rated based on the area affected, particularly the face and neck. If acne causes scarring of the face and neck, it may be more advantageous to rate under the disfigurement or scars schedule instead.
VA Rating Levels
Superficial acne (comedones, papules, pustules) of any extent.
Deep acne (deep inflamed nodules and pus-filled cysts) affecting less than 40% of the face and neck, or deep acne affecting areas of the body other than the face and neck that are non-intertriginous.
Deep acne affecting 40% or more of the face and neck.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →If your acne has caused scarring, especially on the face and neck, check whether a rating under the disfigurement schedule (DC 7800) might be more favorable.
- →The VA draws a clear line between superficial and deep acne. Deep acne involves inflamed nodules and cysts, not just surface-level breakouts.
- →Obtain medical documentation that specifically describes whether your acne is superficial or deep (cystic/nodular).
- →Acne that began or significantly worsened during service due to environmental conditions, stress, or equipment use can be service-connected.
