Write down every condition you want to claim

Include physical and mental health conditions. You can claim multiple conditions in one filing.

For each condition, identify the in-service event, injury, or exposure

This is the "nexus" — the link between your service and your condition. It can be a specific incident, cumulative stress, or an environmental exposure.

Check if any conditions are secondary to an already-rated condition

E.g., a knee injury causing hip problems, or PTSD causing hypertension. Secondary conditions can be rated separately.

Check if any conditions qualify as presumptive

Combat veterans, burn pit/Agent Orange/Camp Lejeune exposures, and certain conditions in specific veterans don't require you to prove the service connection.
