Angioedema
Angioedema and anaphylaxis are rated under DC 7118. Ratings are based on the frequency of attacks and whether the larynx (throat) is involved, which represents a more dangerous presentation.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Attacks without laryngeal involvement, occurring one to four times per year.
20%
Attacks without laryngeal involvement, occurring five to eight times per year, or two to four times per year with laryngeal involvement.
40%
Attacks with laryngeal involvement occurring five or more times per year.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →If your attacks involve throat swelling (laryngeal involvement), that is rated more seriously. Make sure your medical records clearly distinguish whether the larynx is affected.
- →Document every attack, including when it happened, what triggered it, what symptoms you had, and what treatment was needed. The number of attacks per year determines your rating.
- →Carry and document your use of an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) if prescribed. This supports the severity of your condition.
- →This can be secondary to other service-connected conditions or medication reactions. If your angioedema is triggered by medication for another rated condition, explore a secondary claim.
