Barrett's Esophagus
Barrett's esophagus is rated under DC 7207 based on the degree of precancerous cellular changes (dysplasia). The condition must be diagnosed by pathologic testing (biopsy). If difficulty swallowing is present, the condition is rated under the difficulty swallowing schedule instead. If the condition is treated surgically or with radiofrequency ablation, residuals are rated under the swallowing difficulty schedule.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Low-grade dysplasia (cells show small signs of precancerous changes).
30%
High-grade dysplasia (cells show extensive signs of precancerous changes).
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →A biopsy confirming dysplasia is required for this diagnosis. Endoscopy alone without pathology results will not be sufficient.
- →If your Barrett's esophagus also causes difficulty swallowing, you would be rated under the swallowing difficulty schedule instead, which can provide higher ratings.
- →This condition often develops as a complication of long-standing GERD. If your GERD is already service-connected, Barrett's can be a strong secondary claim.
- →Regular surveillance endoscopies are typical for this condition. Keep copies of all biopsy results, as the grade of dysplasia directly determines your rating.
