Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is rated under 38 CFR § 4.130 using the General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders (Diagnostic Code 9432). The VA evaluates occupational and social impairment from manic and depressive episodes.
VA Rating Levels
Diagnosis confirmed but symptoms do not interfere with occupational/social functioning.
Occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms that decrease work efficiency only during periods of significant stress, or symptoms controlled by continuous medication.
Occupational and social impairment with occasional decrease in work efficiency due to depressed mood, anxiety, suspiciousness, panic attacks (weekly or less), chronic sleep impairment, mild memory loss.
Occupational and social impairment with reduced reliability and productivity due to flattened affect, difficulty understanding complex commands, impaired judgment, disturbances of motivation, difficulty establishing/maintaining effective work/social relationships.
Occupational and social impairment with deficiencies in most areas — work, school, family, judgment, thinking, mood — due to suicidal ideation, obsessional rituals, near-continuous panic or depression, spatial disorientation, neglect of personal appearance/hygiene.
Total occupational and social impairment due to gross impairment in thought processes, persistent delusions/hallucinations, grossly inappropriate behavior, persistent danger of hurting self or others, severe memory loss, inability to perform basic self-care.
