Circulatory Disturbances (Post-Phlebitic Syndrome)

Post-phlebitic syndrome, post-thrombotic syndrome, and other venous circulatory disturbances are rated under DC 7121. This typically follows deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and involves chronic venous insufficiency. Each affected limb is rated individually.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Asymptomatic, palpable or visible varicose veins.

10%

Intermittent edema of the extremity or aching and fatigue after prolonged standing or walking, relieved by elevation or compression hosiery.

20%

Persistent edema, incompletely relieved by elevation, with or without beginning stasis pigmentation or eczema.

40%

Persistent edema and stasis pigmentation or eczema, with or without intermittent ulceration.

60%

Persistent edema or subcutaneous induration, stasis pigmentation or eczema, and persistent ulceration.

100%

Massive board-like edema with constant pain at rest.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • If you have had deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the lasting effects are typically rated under this code as post-phlebitic or post-thrombotic syndrome.
  • Each limb is rated separately, so make sure each affected leg is evaluated individually. The bilateral factor applies if both legs are involved.
  • Document the progression of your symptoms, including swelling patterns, skin changes, and any ulceration. Photographs taken over time are strong evidence.
  • This condition can develop secondary to other service-connected conditions or injuries. If your DVT was caused by immobility from another condition, document that link.
