Diabetes Insipidus
Diabetes insipidus (DI) is rated under DC 7909. Despite the name, this condition is not related to Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It occurs when the body cannot properly regulate how it handles fluids, caused by a hormonal abnormality. Ratings are based on symptom severity and treatment requirements.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Persistent excessive urination, OR requires continuous hormonal therapy.
30%
Assigned for 3 months after initial diagnosis. After that, the veteran is rated based on residuals of the disease or treatment side effects.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Diabetes insipidus is completely different from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It involves fluid regulation, not blood sugar. Make sure your diagnosis and records clearly reflect this.
- →The 30% rating is temporary. Document all residual symptoms and treatment side effects before your re-evaluation.
- →If DI is secondary to a TBI or pituitary condition, hormone deficiencies from pituitary or hypothalamus damage are presumptive secondary conditions for moderate or severe TBI.
- →Continuous hormonal therapy alone is enough to qualify for the 10% rating. Make sure your treatment records clearly document ongoing medication use.
