Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca)

Dry eye syndrome and disorders of tear production are rated under DC 6025 and 6031. These conditions usually result in dry eyes due to insufficient tear production. The condition is rated based on visual impairment, incapacitating episodes, or the underlying cause, whichever provides the highest rating. If the veteran only requires non-prescription eye drops, a 0% rating is appropriate. Veterans who received elective laser eye surgery (like LASIK) during service cannot get service connection for resulting dry eyes unless the dry eye can be linked to another condition or existed before the procedure.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Dry eyes managed with non-prescription eye drops only.

10%

Condition affecting one eye and requiring prescription treatment beyond over-the-counter drops.

20%

Condition affecting both eyes and requiring prescription treatment beyond over-the-counter drops.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • If you had LASIK or other elective eye surgery during service, you generally cannot get service connection for dry eyes from that surgery. However, if dry eyes existed before the procedure or are linked to another condition, you may still qualify.
  • Common causes of dry eye syndrome include conjunctival disease, lacrimal process disorders, and glaucoma medications. If any of these are service-connected, pursue dry eyes as secondary.
  • The distinction between non-prescription and prescription eye drops matters for rating. If you are using prescription drops, make sure that is clearly documented.
  • Dry eye syndrome can be rated under multiple approaches: visual impairment, incapacitating episodes, or the underlying cause. Work with your provider to determine which method yields the best result.
  • Dry eyes from burn pit exposure, chemical exposure, or desert deployments may have a strong nexus to service. Document your environmental exposures.
