Elbow and Forearm Conditions
Elbow and forearm conditions are rated under Diagnostic Codes 5205-5213 based on limitation of range of motion (flexion, extension, pronation, supination) and degree of impairment. Ratings differ for the dominant and non-dominant arm. The elbow is classified as a major joint for arthritis rating purposes.
VA Rating Levels
Limitation of flexion to 100 degrees, or limitation of extension to 45-60 degrees, or limitation of forearm pronation (motion lost beyond last quarter of arc, hand does not approach full pronation).
Limitation of flexion to 90 degrees, or limitation of extension to 75 degrees, or forearm flexion limited to 100 degrees and extension to 45 degrees.
Limitation of flexion to 70 degrees (dominant) or limitation of extension to 90-100 degrees (dominant).
Limitation of flexion to 55 degrees (dominant) or limitation of extension to 110 degrees (dominant).
Limitation of flexion to 45 degrees (dominant arm).
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Ratings are different depending on whether it's your dominant or non-dominant arm.
- →The elbow is classified as a major joint for arthritis rating purposes.
- →Make sure to bring up flare-ups with the examiner. They need to estimate your worst-day range of motion.
