Glaucoma (Angle-Closure)

Angle-closure glaucoma is rated under DC 6012. This occurs when the iris bulges forward, narrowing or blocking the drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris. This leads to rapid pressure buildup in the eye. Like open-angle glaucoma, it is rated based on the visual impairment rating system or incapacitating episodes, with a minimum 10% rating when continuous medication is required.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Angle-closure glaucoma is also a presumptive condition if diagnosed within one year of separation at a compensable level.
  • Acute attacks of angle-closure glaucoma can be medical emergencies. Document every emergency visit and treatment, as these count as incapacitating episodes.
  • If you needed laser treatment or surgery, those visits count as incapacitating episodes. Seven or more episodes per year yields a 60% rating under the incapacitating episodes schedule.
  • Make sure your provider documents both visual acuity and visual field measurements, as glaucoma damage is often first detected in the peripheral visual field.
