Eye/VisionDC 6013
Glaucoma (Open-Angle)
Open-angle glaucoma is rated under DC 6013. In this condition, the drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris remains open, but the trabecular meshwork is partially blocked, leading to increased eye pressure and optic nerve damage. The condition is rated based on the visual impairment rating system (visual acuity and/or visual field loss) or incapacitating episodes, whichever produces the higher rating. A minimum 10% rating applies when continuous medication is required.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Minimum rating when continuous medication is required to manage the condition. Higher ratings based on visual impairment or incapacitating episodes.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Glaucoma is a presumptive condition if diagnosed within one year of separation at a compensable level (at least 10%).
- →The 10% minimum applies when you are on continuous eye drop medication. If your vision is significantly affected, you can rate higher through the visual impairment system.
- →Glaucoma can cause both visual acuity loss and visual field loss. Make sure both are evaluated during your C&P exam for the highest possible rating.
- →Glaucoma is a common secondary condition to diabetes, hypertension, and eye trauma. If your glaucoma developed after service due to a service-connected condition, pursue a secondary claim.
- →Incapacitating episodes (requiring physician treatment) can provide an alternative rating path. Track all treatment visits, injections, and procedures.
