Gout

Gout is listed under Diagnostic Code 5017 in the VA rating schedule. While the schedule says to rate it under degenerative arthritis, it can only be rated based on how it affects range of motion of the affected joints. If gout causes severe multi-joint flares, it may alternatively be rated under the multi-joint arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis) schedule if that produces a higher evaluation.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Pain with motion of the affected joint(s), or 2 or more major or minor joints affected by arthritis.

20%

2 or more major or minor joints with occasional incapacitating episodes, or ROM limitation warranting 20% under the specific joint schedule.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Gout is primarily rated based on how it affects your ability to move the affected joints, not just by counting flare-ups.
  • If your gout is severe and involves multiple joints, it may be worth asking the rater to consider the rheumatoid arthritis schedule (DC 5002), as it could produce a higher overall rating.
  • Document every flare-up you have and explain how it affects your ability to use the impacted joints.
