Heart Valve Disease

Heart valve conditions are rated under 38 CFR § 4.104, Diagnostic Codes 7000–7004. The rating is based on METs and ejection fraction, same framework as ischemic heart disease.

VA Rating Levels

30%

Workload of 3–5 METs causes symptoms; EF of 30–50%; or two or more episodes of heart failure per year.

60%

METs of 1–3 cause symptoms; EF 10–29%.

100%

Chronic congestive heart failure; EF less than 10%, or symptoms at rest.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • After valve replacement or repair, request a new C&P exam immediately
  • Regurgitation that worsens with other service-connected conditions is a secondary claim
