Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are rated under DC 7336 based on the type (internal or external), frequency of thrombosis (blood clots), and whether there is persistent bleeding with anemia. Once service connection has been granted, any future recurrence is assumed to be related to service unless there is clear evidence the original grant was in error.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Prolapsed internal hemorrhoids with two or fewer episodes of thrombosis per year, or external hemorrhoids with three or more episodes of thrombosis per year.
20%
Persistent bleeding with anemia, or continuously prolapsed internal hemorrhoids with three or more episodes of thrombosis per year.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Once hemorrhoids are service-connected, the VA assumes any future flare-ups are related. This is an important protection that means you do not have to re-prove connection for recurrences.
- →The distinction between internal and external hemorrhoids matters for the rating criteria. Make sure your medical records specify which type you have.
- →If your hemorrhoids cause persistent bleeding that leads to anemia, that supports a 20% rating. Get your blood work done to document any anemia.
- →Hemorrhoids are one of the most common secondary conditions claimed alongside IBS, Crohn's disease, and other digestive conditions. If another digestive condition contributes to your hemorrhoids, establish that secondary link.
