Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
Hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease, is rated under DC 7900. This condition occurs when the thyroid produces too many hormones. The VA assigns a temporary 30% rating for 6 months after the initial diagnosis. After that period, the veteran is re-evaluated and rated based on any residual symptoms under the appropriate body system schedules.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →The 30% rating is temporary. Make sure to thoroughly document all residual symptoms before your re-evaluation so you can receive ratings under other body system codes.
- →Common secondary conditions include double vision, hyperthyroid heart disease, and other vision problems. Pursue separate ratings for each residual.
- →If your effective date of service connection is after the 6-month window from initial diagnosis, the temporary 30% evaluation cannot be assigned. You would go straight to a residuals-based rating.
- →Consider getting a Thyroid and Parathyroid DBQ completed before your C&P exam to ensure all symptoms are captured.
