Hypoparathyroidism is rated under DC 7905. This condition occurs when the parathyroid glands produce too few hormones. The VA assigns a temporary 100% rating for 3 months after the initial diagnosis. After that period, the veteran is rated on any residual symptoms under the appropriate body system schedules.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • The initial 100% rating is generous but temporary. Use those 3 months to document every residual symptom thoroughly.
  • Common secondary conditions include cataracts, congestive heart failure, decreased kidney function, and kidney stones. Pursue separate ratings for each.
  • Low calcium caused by hypoparathyroidism can affect many body systems. Keep track of all symptoms, even ones that seem unrelated, as they may be ratable residuals.
  • Work with your provider to get comprehensive lab work and specialist evaluations before your re-evaluation date.
