Keratoconus (Conical Cornea)
Keratoconus is rated under DC 6035. This condition causes the cornea to bulge outward into a cone shape, leading to distorted vision. It is rated based on the visual impairment rating system or incapacitating episodes, whichever produces the higher rating. Keratoconus is notable as the only eye condition eligible for laser refractive surgery and corneal crosslinking treatment through the VA.
VA Rating Levels
0%
Keratoconus present but corrected vision remains at 20/40 or better in both eyes.
10%
Visual impairment meets compensable level, OR 1-2 incapacitating episodes per year.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Keratoconus is the only eye condition for which the VA will provide corneal crosslinking or laser refractive surgery. Take advantage of this benefit if offered.
- →Standard glasses may not fully correct keratoconus. If you need specialty contact lenses (like scleral lenses), document that glasses alone are insufficient for proper correction.
- →Corneal crosslinking procedures count as incapacitating episodes. Track all treatment visits.
- →If keratoconus progresses to the point where you need a corneal transplant, the minimum rating increases to 10% under DC 6036 if pain, light sensitivity, or glare is present, with a minimum 30% if aphakia applies.
- →Keratoconus often develops in early adulthood and can be linked to service if it worsened or was first diagnosed during your time in the military.
