Knee - Limitation of Extension
Limitation of knee extension is rated under Diagnostic Code 5261 based on the degree to which the veteran cannot fully straighten their leg. A veteran can receive separate ratings for both limited extension AND limited flexion of the same knee.
VA Rating Levels
0%
Extension limited to between 5 and 9 degrees.
10%
Extension limited to between 10 and 14 degrees.
20%
Extension limited to between 15 and 19 degrees.
30%
Extension limited to between 20 and 29 degrees.
40%
Extension limited to between 30 and 44 degrees.
50%
Extension limited to 45 degrees or more.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →You can receive separate ratings for limited extension and limited flexion of the same knee, so both should be evaluated.
- →A separate instability rating is also possible in addition to your range-of-motion ratings.
- →Make sure to bring up your flare-ups with the examiner. They're required to estimate your worst-day range of motion.
