Knee - Limitation of Flexion
Limitation of knee flexion is rated under Diagnostic Code 5260 based on how far the veteran can bend their knee. A veteran can receive separate ratings for both limited flexion AND limited extension of the same knee. Separate ratings for instability and ROM limitations are also allowed. Examiners and raters are required to consider flare-ups when measuring ROM.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →You can receive separate ratings for limited flexion and limited extension in the same knee, so make sure both are documented.
- →On top of that, a separate instability rating is also possible alongside your range-of-motion limitations.
- →Pain with motion gets you a single 10% rating per knee, regardless of how many ranges of motion are affected.
- →Always tell your examiner about flare-ups. They're required to estimate how limited you are on your worst day.
- →To get an instability rating above 10%, there needs to be documented evidence of a prescribed assistive device like a brace or cane.
