Liver Disease / Hepatitis

Liver conditions including chronic hepatitis are rated under 38 CFR § 4.114, Diagnostic Code 7345. The VA evaluates liver function tests, symptoms, and complications.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Minimal liver disease — elevated enzymes with only minor symptoms. Manageable with medication/monitoring.

30%

Moderate — constant fatigue, malaise, and recurring abdominal pain. Abnormal liver function tests.

50%

Moderately severe — recurring incapacitating episodes of symptoms, or marked functional impairment.

70%

Severe — with gross ascites; or portal hypertension. Major health impairment.

100%

Chronic, active liver disease with serious complications — encephalopathy, ascites, need for paracentesis, or end-stage liver failure.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Hepatitis C is one of the most commonly service-connected conditions due to jet air gun inoculations
  • If treated and cured, you may still be rated for residuals (fibrosis, cirrhosis, fatigue)
  • Document all prior exposure risks related to your service
