Loss of Hard Palate
The hard palate is the bony roof of the mouth. Loss of part or all of the hard palate is rated under DC 9911 based on how much is missing and whether a prosthesis can replace it.

0%
Less than half is missing and can be replaced by a prosthesis.
10%
Half or more is missing and can be replaced by a prosthesis.
20%
Less than half is missing and cannot be replaced by a prosthesis.
30%
Half or more is missing and cannot be replaced by a prosthesis.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Prosthesis viability is a major factor. If a prosthesis cannot work, make sure that is clearly documented by your treating provider.
- →Loss of the hard palate can affect speech, eating, and breathing. Consider whether secondary conditions like speech impairment should also be claimed.
