Meniere's Syndrome (Endolymphatic Hydrops)

Meniere's syndrome is rated under DC 6205. This inner ear disorder causes episodes of vertigo (spinning sensation) along with hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness. The VA offers two ways to rate this condition, and the veteran receives whichever produces the higher combined rating: either a single rating under this schedule, or up to three separate individual ratings for hearing loss, tinnitus, and peripheral vestibular disorder combined together. Ratings under this schedule are based on the frequency and severity of dizziness episodes.

VA Rating Levels

30%

Hearing impairment with episodes of dizziness less than once a month, with or without tinnitus.

60%

Hearing impairment with episodes of dizziness and staggering while walking occurring 1 to 4 times a month, with or without tinnitus.

100%

Hearing impairment with episodes of dizziness and staggering while walking occurring more than once a week, with or without tinnitus.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • The VA will evaluate two rating methods and give you the higher result: one rating under Meniere's, or separate ratings for hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular disorder combined using VA math. Discuss which approach benefits you more.
  • Keep a detailed log of every vertigo episode, including date, duration, severity, and whether it caused staggering. Frequency is the primary factor in determining your rating level.
  • The difference between 60% and 100% depends on whether episodes happen 1-4 times monthly versus more than once weekly. Accurate documentation is essential.
  • Meniere's syndrome can severely impact your ability to work and drive. Document all functional limitations for potential extraschedular consideration.
  • Even if you receive a single Meniere's rating, the service connection for the component conditions (hearing loss, tinnitus) can still be used as a basis for other secondary claims.
