Meniscus Conditions (Cartilage, Semilunar)
Meniscus conditions are rated under Diagnostic Codes 5258 (dislocated cartilage) and 5259 (removed cartilage). A meniscal tear or other meniscus issue can be rated under either code whether the cartilage is removed or dislocated. Even if the cartilage is removed and not dislocated, it can still potentially qualify for the 20% evaluation. However, if the symptoms of the meniscus (pain and swelling) are already accounted for in an increased ROM rating, a separate meniscus rating is not allowed.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Cartilage has been removed and there are residual symptoms.
20%
Cartilage is dislocated with frequent episodes of locking, pain, and swelling into the joint.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Before November 29, 2017, the VA did not allow separate evaluations for knee and meniscus conditions. That policy has since been updated.
- →If the pain and swelling from your meniscus is already being counted toward an increased range-of-motion rating, a separate meniscus rating won't be allowed on top of that.
- →Even if your cartilage was removed rather than dislocated, you may still qualify for the 20% evaluation.
- →Keep a record of any episodes of knee locking, pain, and swelling. That documentation can make a real difference.
