Migraine Headaches

All types of headaches are rated under Diagnostic Code 8100, using the migraine schedule. Ratings depend on both the frequency and severity of the headaches. The key term in the rating schedule is 'prostrating,' which means the headache is so severe that when it strikes, your day is effectively over. You may need to take medication, take the day off, isolate, or seek medical attention. Even if medication helps, it may make you too drowsy to work or do other activities. If headaches are not prostrating, a compensable rating will not be assigned. Migraines are a presumptive condition if diagnosed within one year of separation at a severity of at least 10%, and also for veterans exposed to Gulf environmental hazards if the condition qualifies as a MUCMI.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Prostrating attacks occurring once in 3 months or less frequently.

10%

Prostrating attacks occurring approximately once every 2 months.

30%

Prostrating attacks occurring at least once a month.

50%

Very frequent, completely prostrating, and prolonged attacks that are productive of severe economic inadaptability.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Documenting the frequency and severity of your headaches is critical. Many veterans find headache tracking or diary apps very helpful for building a record.
  • Personal statements and buddy statements can be powerful evidence showing how your headaches affect your daily life and ability to work.
  • The term 'prostrating' essentially means the headache stops you in your tracks. If your headaches are not at this level of severity, you will not receive a compensable rating.
  • For the 50% rating, you must show that your attacks cause 'severe economic inadaptability,' meaning they seriously impact your ability to earn a living.
  • If your migraines are secondary to TBI, they can be rated separately from the TBI itself as long as the symptoms are not double-counted.
