Military Sexual Trauma (MST) / PTSD-MST

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) is a cause of PTSD and other mental health conditions, not a separate diagnostic code. PTSD secondary to MST is rated under DC 9411 using the same General Rating Formula. The stressor verification process for MST is different — you do not need military records confirming the incident; behavioral changes serve as alternative evidence.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Mild PTSD symptoms related to MST that slightly affect work/social functioning.

30%

Noticeable PTSD impact from MST — anxiety, sleep disruption, avoidance.

50%

Significant reduction in reliability/productivity; relationship difficulties, flashbacks.

70%

Severe PTSD from MST affecting most life areas.

100%

Total occupational/social impairment.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • MST-related PTSD does not require service records confirming the event — behavioral markers (e.g., transfer requests, substance use changes, drops in performance) can substitute
  • Request a female or male examiner based on your preference — you are entitled to this
  • MST survivors can also claim secondary conditions: depression, substance use, fibromyalgia
  • The VA has MST coordinators at every VA medical center — they can help with claims
