Muscle Injuries

Muscle injuries are rated under Diagnostic Codes 5301-5329 based on the specific muscle group affected and the severity of the injury (slight, moderate, moderately severe, or severe). Each affected muscle group is rated individually. Rhabdomyolysis (DC 5330) and compartment syndrome (DC 5331) are also rated based on the affected muscle groups. Common secondary conditions from rhabdomyolysis include heart and kidney issues.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Slight injury to the muscle group with minimal scarring and no impairment of function.

10%

Moderate injury to the muscle group with some loss of power or lowered threshold of fatigue.

20%

Moderately severe injury to the muscle group with evidence of inability to keep up with work requirements.

30%

Severe injury to the muscle group with significant loss of function. (Actual rating depends on specific muscle group - some go higher.)

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Each affected muscle group is rated individually, so multiple ratings are possible.
  • The maximum rating varies depending on the specific muscle group involved. Some groups cap out at 40%, others at 50% or higher.
  • If you have rhabdomyolysis, keep in mind that it can cause secondary heart and kidney conditions, which may qualify for separate ratings.
