Muscle Injuries / Myositis
Muscle injuries and myositis are rated under 38 CFR § 4.73, Diagnostic Codes 5320–5329. Each muscle group (shoulder girdle, arm, back, thigh, leg, etc.) has its own code and is rated as slight, moderate, moderately severe, or severe based on pain, swelling, and functional loss.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Slight — some loss of deep fascia or muscular substance but only mild functional impairment.
20%
Moderate — moderate loss of function, pain on use, or scar tissue formation causing limitation.
30%
Moderately severe — marked loss of muscular function with palpable fibrosis, significant weakness.
40%
Severe — more than half of the muscle belly destroyed or involved; major functional loss of the limb group.
