Nontoxic Thyroid Enlargement
Nontoxic thyroid enlargement is rated under DC 7902. This condition involves the thyroid becoming enlarged due to tumors, nodules, or swelling, but unlike toxic thyroid enlargement, it does NOT cause overproduction of thyroid hormones. The condition does not have its own rating schedule. Instead, if the enlargement causes issues like neck disfigurement or difficulty swallowing, the veteran may receive separate ratings for those specific symptoms.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Even though this condition has no standalone rating, it can still be service-connected. Focus on documenting the complications it causes.
- →If the swelling causes visible disfigurement of the neck, you may qualify for a rating under the skin disfigurement schedule (DC 7800).
- →If the enlarged thyroid puts pressure on the esophagus and makes swallowing difficult, that can be rated under the digestive system schedule.
- →Getting the condition service-connected is important because it opens the door to secondary claims for any complications that develop over time.
