Obesity

Obesity is not a separately ratable disability under the VA rating schedule and has no diagnostic code. However, obesity can play an important role in service connection as an intermediate condition. If obesity is service-connected (for example, caused by medications for another service-connected condition), it can serve as a link to secondary conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, and joint problems. The key is using obesity as part of a chain of causation in your claims strategy.

VA Rating Levels

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • While obesity itself receives no disability rating, getting it service-connected can unlock secondary claims for conditions caused by the weight gain, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, knee and hip conditions, and more.
  • Obesity is commonly secondary to psychiatric medications prescribed for PTSD, depression, or other mental health conditions that cause weight gain as a side effect.
  • Document your weight gain timeline and correlate it with service-connected medications or conditions. A clear cause-and-effect chain in your records strengthens secondary claims.
  • In some cases, it may be easier and more effective to claim a condition directly rather than routing through obesity as an intermediary. Discuss strategy with a VSO or claims agent.
