Obstructed Urination (Voiding)

Obstructed voiding is the second measure under the VA's Urinary Rating System. It rates conditions that make it difficult to urinate, evaluating symptoms like hesitancy, slow or weak stream, and low force of stream. Higher ratings require documented objective findings such as residual urine volume or peak flow rate measurements.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Only symptoms present (hesitancy, slow or weak stream, low force of stream), with or without needing stretching treatments 1-2 times per year.

10%

Obvious symptoms with one or more of the following: greater than 150cc of urine remaining after voiding, peak flow rate below 10cc/sec, regular UTIs due to the obstruction, or requiring stretching treatments at least every 2-3 months.

30%

Requires intermittent or continuous use of a catheter.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • The key to moving from 0% to 10% is having objective medical evidence beyond symptoms alone. Request uroflowmetry testing (measures peak flow rate) and post-void residual measurement.
  • If you require catheter use (even intermittent), that automatically qualifies for the maximum 30% under this measure. Make sure catheter use is documented in your records.
  • Obstructed voiding is commonly caused by BPH (enlarged prostate), urethral stricture, or neurological conditions affecting bladder control.
  • Regular UTIs caused by the obstruction count as supporting evidence for a 10% rating. Document every infection and its connection to your voiding difficulties.
