Peptic Ulcer Disease

Peptic ulcer disease (gastric and duodenal ulcers) is rated under 38 CFR § 4.114, Diagnostic Codes 7305–7307. Ratings are based on frequency and severity of symptoms, response to therapy, and complications.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Mild — episodic epigastric distress with heartburn, or symptom-free with continuous medication.

20%

Moderate — recurring episodes of epigastric distress with dietary restriction and medication use required most of the time.

40%

Moderately severe — symptoms not well controlled; recurrent pain requiring frequent medical visits and dietary restriction.

60%

Severe — pain not adequately controlled; marked weight loss, vomiting, hemorrhage, or other complications.

  • Document how medications for your other SC conditions contributed to the ulcer
