Pterygium (Eye Web)

Pterygium is rated under DC 6034. This is a growth of the conjunctiva or mucous membrane that covers the white part of the eye, extending over the cornea. The condition is rated based on the visual impairment rating system, incapacitating episodes, or the conjunctivitis schedule, whichever produces the highest rating. Separate ratings for disfigurement or other secondary conditions may also be granted.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Pterygium present with no significant visual impairment.

10%

Visual impairment, incapacitating episodes, or active conjunctivitis meeting compensable criteria.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Pterygium is common among veterans who served in sunny, dusty, or windy environments. Document your deployment locations and outdoor exposure.
  • If the pterygium causes disfigurement of the eye, a separate rating may be available under the skin disfigurement schedule.
  • Surgical removal of pterygium can sometimes lead to recurrence or complications. Document any post-surgical issues for potential additional ratings.
  • Even if the growth is not currently affecting your vision, getting it service-connected protects you if it progresses and begins to impair your sight in the future.
