Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is rated under DC 6008. This condition occurs when the retina separates from the back of the eye. It is rated based on the visual impairment rating system or incapacitating episodes, whichever produces the higher rating. Retinal detachment can result from eye trauma, high myopia, or other eye diseases, and urgent treatment is typically required to prevent permanent vision loss.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Visual impairment meets compensable level, OR 1-2 incapacitating episodes per year requiring physician treatment.

20%

3-4 incapacitating episodes per year, or equivalent visual impairment.

40%

5-6 incapacitating episodes per year, or equivalent visual impairment.

60%

7 or more incapacitating episodes per year, or equivalent visual impairment.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Emergency treatment for retinal detachment counts as an incapacitating episode. Document the date, type of treatment, and outcome of every procedure.
  • Retinal detachment from eye trauma during service has a strong nexus. Document the incident, including any blast exposure, impact injuries, or training accidents.
  • Even after successful reattachment surgery, residual vision problems can be rated under the visual impairment system. Pursue both visual acuity and visual field evaluations.
  • Retinal detachment in one eye increases the risk of detachment in the other. If the second eye detaches and can be linked to the same service-connected cause, it may qualify as a secondary condition.
  • Laser treatments and surgical procedures for the retina each count as incapacitating episodes. Track all follow-up treatments.
