Shoulder Replacement
Shoulder replacement is rated under Diagnostic Code 5051. After the procedure, the veteran receives a temporary 100% rating for approximately 1 year (plus 1 bonus month under 38 CFR 4.30), followed by a minimum rating of 30% for the dominant arm or 20% for the non-dominant arm. Any other musculoskeletal shoulder evaluations are discontinued on the date of the procedure.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →The temporary 100% rating includes a bonus month, bringing the total to roughly 13 months from the date of admission.
- →After that temporary period ends, you can file for an increase if your symptoms support a higher rating.
- →All other musculoskeletal shoulder evaluations are discontinued on the date of your procedure.
- →Any scars from the surgery may qualify for their own separate rating, so keep that in mind.
