TMJ / Jaw Conditions
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) conditions are rated under 38 CFR § 4.150, Diagnostic Code 9905. The VA measures inter-incisal opening (how wide you can open your mouth) as the primary criterion.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Inter-incisal measurement of 31–40mm, or painful motion of the jaw.
20%
Inter-incisal measurement of 21–30mm — moderate limitation in opening the mouth.
30%
Inter-incisal measurement of 11–20mm — marked limitation.
40%
Inter-incisal measurement of 0–10mm — severe limitation, unable to open mouth meaningfully.
