TMJ / Jaw Conditions

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) conditions are rated under 38 CFR § 4.150, Diagnostic Code 9905. The VA measures inter-incisal opening (how wide you can open your mouth) as the primary criterion.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Inter-incisal measurement of 31–40mm, or painful motion of the jaw.

20%

Inter-incisal measurement of 21–30mm — moderate limitation in opening the mouth.

30%

Inter-incisal measurement of 11–20mm — marked limitation.

40%

Inter-incisal measurement of 0–10mm — severe limitation, unable to open mouth meaningfully.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • TMJ is very commonly secondary to PTSD (bruxism/teeth grinding from anxiety and hypervigilance)
  • Document headaches and ear pain associated with TMJ
  • A dental specialist's measurement of inter-incisal opening is the key piece of evidence
