Urinary Frequency
Urinary frequency is one of three measures under the VA's Urinary Rating System. It rates how often the veteran needs to urinate during the day and night. Many conditions funnel into this rating system, and the veteran receives a single rating under whichever of the three measures (frequency, obstructed voiding, or voiding dysfunction) produces the highest rating.
VA Rating Levels
10%
Must urinate every 2-3 hours during the day, or must urinate 2 times during the night.
20%
Must urinate every 1-2 hours during the day, or must urinate 3-4 times during the night.
40%
Must urinate more frequently than every hour during the day, or must urinate 5 or more times during the night.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Track your urination frequency for at least a few weeks before your C&P exam. A detailed log of daytime intervals and nighttime wake-ups is powerful supporting evidence.
- →Nighttime frequency (nocturia) is evaluated separately from daytime. Either one can qualify you for a rating, so document both carefully.
- →Urinary frequency is commonly secondary to prostate conditions, diabetes (diabetic neuropathy affecting the bladder), spinal cord injuries, or medications for other service-connected conditions.
- →The VA rates under whichever measure is highest: frequency, obstructed voiding, or voiding dysfunction. Check all three to determine your best rating path.
- →If you are also experiencing leakage requiring absorbent materials, the voiding dysfunction schedule may produce a higher rating than the frequency schedule.
