Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Urinary tract infections are rated under the UTI schedule in 38 CFR 4.115a. UTIs are bacterial infections that can occur in the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Ratings are based on the frequency and intensity of treatment required. Multiple conditions including kidney infections (pyelonephritis), chronic epididymitis, and prostate conditions can be rated under this schedule. If UTIs cause kidney issues, the kidney failure schedule may produce a higher rating.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Regular infections not requiring hospitalization, but requiring suppressive drug therapy (prolonged antibiotic or medication use) for less than 6 months.

10%

Regular infections requiring 1-2 hospitalizations per year, or requiring occasional intensive treatment, or regular continuous medication use.

30%

Regular infections requiring 3 or more hospitalizations per year, or requiring intensive and continuous treatment beyond standard medication or hospitalization (such as surgical management of nephrostomy/stent or IV antibiotics).

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Suppressive drug therapy means prolonged use of antibiotics or other medications. If you are on continuous antibiotics for UTI prevention, that supports at least a 0% rating.
  • Catheters alone are not considered intensive and continuous treatment under this schedule. However, catheter use may qualify you for a higher rating under the obstructed voiding measure instead.
  • Document every UTI episode, hospitalization, and course of treatment. Frequency and treatment intensity are the key rating factors.
  • If UTIs are caused by another service-connected condition (diabetes, catheter use, prostate issues), pursue the UTIs as a secondary claim.
  • UTIs that cause kidney complications may unlock a higher rating under the kidney failure schedule. If you develop kidney involvement, request kidney function testing.
