Vision Loss / Eye Conditions
Vision and eye conditions are rated under 38 CFR § 4.75–4.84, Diagnostic Codes 6000–6091. Ratings are based on visual acuity in each eye using a combination table (better eye/worse eye), or by specific condition (e.g., glaucoma, retinal detachment, field defects).
VA Rating Levels
10%
Corrected visual acuity of 20/40 in the worse eye with better eye at 20/20, or equivalent visual impairment on the VA combination table.
20%

40%
20/200 in the worse eye.
60%
20/400 in the worse eye, or significant bilateral loss.
100%
Only light perception or worse in both eyes; legal blindness.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →Both eyes must be evaluated — better/worse eye combinations determine the final rating
- →Glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment each have separate diagnostic codes but all convert to the visual acuity table
- →TBI is a major cause of service-connected vision problems
- →If visual field loss (tunnel vision) is present, it is rated separately under DC 6080
