Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa is rated under Diagnostic Code 9520 using a separate rating schedule based on body weight and incapacitating episodes. This is the only exception to the single mental health rating rule; veterans with an eating disorder will receive a separate rating for the eating disorder in addition to any other mental health rating. The VA only rates eating disorders that result in extreme weight loss. Incapacitating episodes are defined as bed rest and treatment prescribed by a physician.

VA Rating Levels

0%

Weight is below the expected minimum weight for the individual's height.

10%

30%

Weight is below 85% of the expected minimum weight with more than 2 weeks but fewer than 6 weeks of incapacitating episodes per year.

60%

Weight is below 85% of the expected minimum weight with more than 6 weeks of incapacitating episodes per year.

100%

Weight is below 80% of the expected minimum weight with at least 6 weeks of incapacitating episodes per year and hospitalization more than twice a year for nutrition by IV or feeding tube.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Eating disorders are the one exception to the single mental health rating rule. You can actually receive a separate eating disorder rating on top of your other mental health rating.
  • The VA only rates eating disorders when they lead to significant weight loss.
  • For rating purposes, incapacitating episodes mean bed rest that was prescribed by a physician.
  • Common secondary conditions to be aware of include Barrett's Esophagus, esophagitis, and GERD.
