Arthritis (Degenerative Joint Disease)
Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) is rated under 38 CFR § 4.71a, Diagnostic Code 5003. X-ray confirmation of arthritis with painful motion qualifies for at least a 10% rating per joint — or higher if combined with limited range of motion under the specific joint's diagnostic code.
VA Rating Levels
X-ray evidence of degenerative arthritis with painful motion. Two or more major joints, or two or more minor joint groups are affected. This is the primary rating basis unless a joint-specific code gives a higher rating.
X-ray evidence in multiple joints with significant painful limitation that is not better explained by a joint-specific code. The VA calls this 'two or more major joint groups — with or without symptoms.'
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →DC 5003 is a 'catch-all' — always compare it with joint-specific codes and use whichever gives you a higher rating
- →Every affected joint (knee, hip, shoulder, etc.) can be considered
- →Pain on motion is specifically required — document it at every examination
- →X-rays are required for diagnosis under DC 5003
