Burn Scars / Scars

Scars are rated under 38 CFR § 4.118, Diagnostic Codes 7800–7805. Ratings consider the location (face/head/neck vs. other), whether the scar is unstable (breaks down frequently), whether it is painful, and the total area of scarring.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Scar that is painful and unstable (breaks open or bleeds), or a scar more than 6cm² on the face/head/neck, or affecting more than 6cm² on other body areas.

20%

Scar with a total area 12cm² or more on the face/head/neck; or painful/unstable scar on other body parts with area 144cm² or more.

30%

Scar on face/head/neck with area 3 square inches or more, or significant disfigurement.

80%

Major burn scar/disfigurement affecting 40% or more of the face or producing severe grotesque disfigurement.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Every scar from a service-connected injury or surgery can be rated
  • Surgical scars from service-connected procedures (knee surgery, shoulder surgery) should be claimed
  • Measure your scar area and bring a photograph to your C&P exam
