Burn Scars / Scars
Scars are rated under 38 CFR § 4.118, Diagnostic Codes 7800–7805. Ratings consider the location (face/head/neck vs. other), whether the scar is unstable (breaks down frequently), whether it is painful, and the total area of scarring.
VA Rating Levels
Scar that is painful and unstable (breaks open or bleeds), or a scar more than 6cm² on the face/head/neck, or affecting more than 6cm² on other body areas.
Scar with a total area 12cm² or more on the face/head/neck; or painful/unstable scar on other body parts with area 144cm² or more.
Scar on face/head/neck with area 3 square inches or more, or significant disfigurement.
Major burn scar/disfigurement affecting 40% or more of the face or producing severe grotesque disfigurement.
