Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Multiple sclerosis is rated under 38 CFR § 4.124a, Diagnostic Code 8018. The VA rates MS based on frequency of exacerbations and the degree of impairment between attacks — or the level of chronic disability.
VA Rating Levels
30%
Recent development of disease, or following resolution of an acute episode, with slight residual impairment.
60%
Favorable employment history but with incapacitating exacerbations; moderate neurological deficits between attacks.
70%
Numerous exacerbations, increasing disability; significant neurological deficits affect daily function.
100%
Chronic progressive form, or with severe neurological deficits — inability to walk without assistance, bladder/bowel dysfunction.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →MS can receive a 100% rating even if symptoms are episodic, if the cumulative disability meets criteria
- →Each MS symptom (weakness, bladder dysfunction, cognitive issues) may also be rated separately
- →VA presumes MS is service-connected if it appears within 7 years of discharge
