Oral and Dental Cancer

Oral and dental cancer is rated under DC 9918 at 100% while the cancer is active and for six months after treatment ends with the condition in remission. After the six-month period, the VA re-evaluates and assigns a rating based on any residual effects such as jaw loss, tooth loss, speech impairment, scarring, or other functional limitations. Benign tumors (DC 9917) are not compensable on their own, but residuals from their removal, such as scars, may be rated separately.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Keep detailed records of your treatment timeline because the 100% rating continues for six months after your last treatment.
  • After the six-month rating period, the VA will schedule a re-evaluation. Make sure all residual effects are documented before that exam.
  • Residuals from oral cancer treatment often include jaw bone loss, tooth loss, nerve damage, speech problems, and scarring, each of which may be separately ratable.
  • If your cancer was caused by radiation exposure or burn pit exposure during service, explore whether presumptive service connection applies.
