Deep Scars (Underlying Soft Tissue Damage)

Deep scars that involve underlying soft tissue damage (not on the head, face, or neck) are rated under Diagnostic Code 7801. Ratings are based on the total area of the scarring. The body is divided into six areas (front torso, back, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg) and each area can have its scars rated separately. If the veteran would get a higher rating by combining scar sizes from all areas into one rating, the VA will do that instead. Deep and superficial scars in the same area can receive separate ratings.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Total area of deep scarring is 6 to 11.99 square inches (39 to 77 square centimeters).

20%

Total area of deep scarring is 12 to 71.99 square inches (78 to 465 square centimeters).

30%

Total area of deep scarring is 72 to 143.99 square inches (465 to 929 square centimeters).

40%

Total area of deep scarring is 144 square inches (929 square centimeters) or more.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • The VA divides the body into six areas for scar ratings: front torso, back, left arm, right arm, left leg, and right leg. Each area can be rated separately.
  • If combining all scar areas into a single rating gives you a higher result, the VA should use that approach instead of rating each area separately.
  • Deep scars are eligible for bilateral factor consideration, as long as the rating is at least 10% and is not based on whole-body involvement.
  • If a scar limits your range of motion, you may qualify for a separate rating for that functional impairment.
  • Scars that are both deep AND painful or unstable can receive separate ratings under both DC 7801 and DC 7804.
