Painful or Unstable Scars
Painful or unstable scars are rated under Diagnostic Code 7804 based on the number of qualifying scars. An unstable scar is one with frequent loss of skin covering, including peeling or scabbing. This rating can be assigned in addition to ratings for the scar itself under other scar diagnostic codes (such as DC 7800, 7801, or 7802). If at least one scar is both painful AND unstable, the rating under this schedule is increased by an additional 10%.
VA Rating Levels
10%
1 or 2 scars that are painful or unstable.
20%
3 or 4 scars that are painful or unstable.
30%
5 or more scars that are painful or unstable.
Exam Tips & Key Evidence
- →For VA rating purposes, the C&P examiner must note that the scars are painful when touched. Self-reported pain alone is not sufficient.
- →If even one scar is BOTH painful AND unstable, you receive a 10% increase (normal math) on top of your DC 7804 rating.
- →You can receive a rating under this code in addition to separate ratings for disfigurement (DC 7800), deep scars (DC 7801), or superficial scars (DC 7802).
- →Make sure to point out every painful and unstable scar during your C&P exam. Each scar that qualifies adds to your count and potentially your rating.
