Superficial Scars

Superficial scars (affecting only the skin, not the underlying tissue) that are not on the head, face, or neck are rated under Diagnostic Code 7802. These scars must cover a large area to receive a compensable rating. The same body-area rules apply as with deep scars, and superficial scars can be rated separately from deep scars in the same area.

VA Rating Levels

10%

Total area of superficial scarring is 144 square inches (929 square centimeters) or more.

Exam Tips & Key Evidence

  • Superficial scars only affect the skin surface and do not involve the tissues underneath. If your scars are deeper, they may rate better under DC 7801 for deep scars.
  • Even if your scars do not meet the area threshold for a compensable rating, check whether they qualify as painful or unstable under DC 7804 for additional rating.
  • Scars from service-connected surgeries or injuries are separately ratable conditions.
  • Document the total area of all superficial scars, as combining them may help you reach the 144-square-inch threshold.
